The following are kitten rearing tips that have worked for our cattery.
We thought we would share them here in hopes of helping others with
their kitten husbandry:

VACCINES

Once eyes open we administer Heska intranasal vaccine, one drop in each nostril which provides protection
against upper respiratory diseases (rhinotracheitis and calicivirus), plus excellent protection from feline panleukopenia.
You can repeat this again 4 weeks later.

Around 8 weeks of age we administer Protex-3 by Intervet which provides protection against rhinotracheitis,
calicivirus and panleukopenia.  This is a modified live virus that is injectable.

SNEEZES

Gentamicin Solution can effectively be used to relieve sneezing.  We give 1 drop in each eye and each nostril up
to 3 times a day. Repeat if needed the following day.

CONJUNCTIVITUS

First clean the eyes with a strong tea made from a regular tea bag.  Use at room temperature.
Dip a clean cotton ball in the strong tea and gently clean the eye of any crusting or gunk (puss) in the eye.

Next use Gentamicin Solution.  We give 1 drop in each eye and each nostril up to 3 times a day.
Repeat if needed the following day.

Sometimes we also follow up with a little Tobramycin ointment in each eye.

UPPER RESPIRATORY INFECTION

With URI's we use Zithromax.  Gentamicin Solution in the eyes and nose works well also.
You can also use a Walmart brand called "Little Noses" which is a decongestant drop for
mirror congestion (one drop the first day in the nose, two the second and third days).
"Little Colds" is a multi-symptom formula used for stuffy noses, coughs, fever & pain.
Other brands contain harmful ingredients which can kill your kitten or cat.

NEBULIZER

Nebulizers are great to use with URI's when a baby is congested.
Add the following into the nebulizing cup: 1/2 cc Gentamicin Solution, 1/2 cc Tylan Solution, 9 cc purified water.
You can nebulize up to 3 to 4 times a day with good success.

DIAREAH

Tylan Solution can effectively be used to treat diareah.  We give our adult cats 1/2 cc injected under the skin.  Baby
kittens would get 1/4 cc injected under the skin.  Repeat as needed until the problem resolves.

IMMUNE SYSTEM BOOSTERS

Lysine helps to boost the immune system.

500mg - 1000mg daily (put directly into cats drinking water daily).
Lysine is an essential amino acid which suppresses the feline herpes virus and

upper respiratory virus known as Rhinotracheitis. Lysine is

an amino acid which competes with arginine, another amino

acid, that herpes virus must have in order to reproduce.

FELINE PINE LITTER

We use Feline Pine litter in our birthing nest areas.  Clay and clumping litter is harmful to babies.

BIRTHING CAGES

We highly recommend the birthing cages made by CD&E Enterprises.
